Thomas Hobbes thought that people in general were naturally bad, and if left alone, without an all powerful government, would destroy themselves. Jean-Jacques Rousseau, however, was of a completely different view, One that humans were naturally good, and merely needed a gentle nudge in the right direction to do good with the world. I disagree with both of these views.
In my opinion, people are naturally bad, but that is what keeps society, and by extension, government, moving forwards. If people weren't trying to best eachother, no-one would do anything more than what is necessary to stay alive, because there would be no reason. Greed is humanity's motivation. If we weren't greedy, we wouldn't have war, a good example to oppose my view, but we also wouldn't have civilization as we know it! No Great Wall of China, without the mongols trying to steal the Chinese peoples' stuff. No roads, tables, juice boxes, phones, or computers, without people trying to make everything easier, (being greedy for more time), and without greed, we wouldn't even have fire, because people wouldn't be greedy for warmth! In conclusion, society in essence, and the people who form it, are naturally greedy, violent, and self centered. But that is what makes society what it is. Good or Bad, you decide.
